Why Are We Bringing Women Together For Rebel Mums?

This last year has been unlike any in our lifetime. I don’t think any of us expected it to last as long as it has or impact us in so many ways.

As parents, mothers and women we have been pulled in every direction possible and all without the support of other women. In a recent podcast between Brene Brown & Melinda Gates they discussed the flight or fight response and how this had only been tested on Men (what a surprise!) in further studies on women it was found that…

“The fight or flight response is typically a male response to danger and more recent research suggests that females adopt a ‘tend and befriend’ response in stressful/dangerous situations. According to Taylor et al. (2000), women are more likely to protect their offspring (tend) and form alliances with other women (befriend), rather than fight an adversary or flee”

So in stressful situations our natural instinct is to come together. Also as so many of us now live away from our matriarchal family members, support and sisterhood is needed more than ever. Zoom has been a great tool to bring people together, but nothing can feel more real than being in a circle physically with other Women. We need that connection to thrive.

What we unexpectedly found bringing Dance Like a Mother back in September for that short time, was how many mums had not met any other mums. Many had had babies (often first time) and had no interaction with other mums. We totally underestimated how much our classes brought women together, created a community, joy and celebrated us not just as mums, but as women in our own right.

On hearing we couldn’t bring Dance Like a Mother back until step 3 (stay tuned for bookings opening soon!), we knew we had to find a way to see you all and bring women together for some much needed connection and joy.

Enter, Rebel Mums…

What's Rebel Mums all about?

From the team behind Dance Like a Mother CIC, Rebel Mums is a parent & baby group where you will be made to feel welcome, heard and supported by our team and other parents.

This is our chance to bring you together with like-minded women and parents, in a space that is non-judgmental, fun and relaxed. The sessions will be run by our Instructors and will also cover our Babywearing 101 over the 4 weeks, for those who want to know more about babywearing safely.

We will have some great tunes playing, give you a chance to get to know each other and end with an uplifting relaxation to leave you feeling happy and calm. You can attend with newborns and start to meet women in your area. Unfortunately due to Covid restrictions we can’t have crawlers or walkers attend.

We honestly can’t wait to get back to running our classes in a way that's as inclusive as we can possibly be.

The sessions will run for 4 weeks from 19th of April until our Dance Like a Mother classes return on the 17th of May (based on current Step 3 date). If the sessions prove to be successful, we are looking at rolling out regular Rebel Mums sessions going forward around our DLAM classes and would like to use these 4 weeks to get your feedback on what you need and want to feel more connected, supported and empowered.

Accessible for all

This year we worked hard to gain funding so we could better support our community. We did this just last month with an award from the National Lottery for £10k and an overwhelming donation to our Aviva Fund from so many of you, your friends, families & businesses. The majority of this money will go towards funding the Rebel Mums sessions and for FREE spaces for our Dance Like a Mother classes and all our online adult classes.

Our aim with this funding is to increase diversity and make our classes affordable for all, which is why we have made the Rebel Mums sessions pay as you feel.

The money raised from this will go towards future sessions and workshops.

If you have been impacted by Covid financially you can take a free space for Rebel Mums and Lydia; our wellness lead will be in touch with a very short survey for you to fill out before attending.

We will also be asking everyone taking part to fill out a quick online, anonymous survey for us to better understand what you need and want and If the sessions have helped you in any way.

We are beyond excited to be back with you soon and please stay tuned for more details on Dance Like a Mother classes launching again soon.
